Mr. Gerald Lee "G.L." Roper, Jr., 78 of Gainesville died Wednesday August 18, 2010 at his residence.
Born in Eatonton, Georgia Mr. Roper had lived in Hall County for most of his life. He was the son of the late Rev. G.L., Sr. and Pauline Allison Roper. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Mr. Roper served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, was a member of the Paul E. Bolding Post #7 American Legion and the V.F.W., he also was a member and deacon of Lakewood Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, Mr. Roper also sang with the Gainesville Chorale for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary M. "Mickie" Roper, Gainesville; adopted son, Lee Watkins, Dawsonville; sister, Peggy J. Phillips, Birmingham, Alabama; nephew, Mark C. Phillips, Birmingham, Alabama; special friend, Evelyn Evans, Gainesville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Vic and Margie Whitmire, Garnett and Margaret Whitmire, all of Gainesville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday August 20, 2010 in the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gene Brooks will officiate. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Thursday August 19, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers that family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, 2150 Limestone Parkway, Gainesville, Georgia 30501.
