Sidney Lanier Pope, Sr.

Mr. Sidney Lanier Pope, Sr. age 78, of Jefferson, Georgia passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at Hill Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Mr. Pope was born on July 31, 1932 to the late J.O. Pope, Sr. and Lorraine Johnson Pope of Covington, Georgia. Mr. Pope graduated from Fulton County High School in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Pope was a military policeman on a Destroyer in the Navy. He was retired from Atlanta Dental. He was a Mason with the Lakewood Lodge No. 443, Atlanta, Georgia. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Howard Pope, his son, Walter DeLeon Pope, grandson, Walter Duane Pope and brothers, Joe Pope and Wallace Pope.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Pope, Jefferson, Georgia; sons and daughters-in-law, Sidney Lanier (Lanny) Pope, Jr. and Denise Pope of Commerce, Georgia; Wallace Kevin Pope and Karen Pope of Jefferson, Georgia; Steven Lee Pope, Sr. and Meriam Pope of Covington, Georgia and daughter in law, Cindy Pope of Jefferson, Georgia. Grandchildren; Jennifer Pope, Shannon Pope, Jody Pope, Josh Pope, Leslie Pope, Kimberly Pope, Kristopher Pope, Steven Pope, Michael Pope and 5 great grand children. Sister-in-law, Iris Pope of Covington, Georgia, four nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Memorial Service was held on Monday, August 9, 2010, at 4:00pm at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Jefferson, Georgia with Rev. Tilly Welborn officiating. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1368 Ebenezer Church Road, Jefferson, Georgia 30549. Peachtree Cremation is handling the arrangements, 678-205-5550.
