Shirley Anne Whelchel McCool

Little and Davenport Funeral Home announces the death of Shirley Anne Whelchel McCool, 74, of Memphis, Tennessee and a native of Gainesville, GA.

Mrs. McCool passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 in Memphis. Interment will be at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 20, 2010. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel at First United Methodist Church of Gainesville.



Mrs. McCool was predeceased by her parents, Mary and William Pinckney Whelchel, Sr.



She is survived by her sister, Nell Whelchel Wiegand, of Gainesville, and brother William Pinckney Whelchel, Jr. and his wife Dot. Nieces and nephews, as survivors, are Mary Beth and Jim Begley, Ginny and Al Crumley of Gainesville; Laura and Doug Henderson and Bill and Donna Whelchel of Atlanta, GA, and a number of grand nieces and nephews.



A graduate of Gainesville High School, Mrs. McCool graduated from Mercer University and moved to Memphis where she was associated with the Phi Mu National Sorority. She then received a Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling at Memphis State University. For some 30 years she was a counselor at Memphis Southwest Community College.



During her 50 years in Memphis, she was an active member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church and was involved in a number of civic activities.
