Sam James Stancil, age 76 of Alto, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Rabun County on May 21, 1933, he was the son of the late John D. and Jessie Mae Kelley Stancil. He was self-employed and also a truck driver for a number of years. He served our country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, various sports and gardening. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Sammy Neal Stancil; daughter-in-law, Kathy Stancil; sister, Myrtle Ledford and granddaughter, Shauna Bouchard.
Surviving are wife of 54 years, Imogene W. Stancil of Alto; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth & Johnny Wade of Alto; son, Sam Dewayne Stancil of Alto; son and daughter-in-law, Randall & Vicki Foster of Alto; sisters, Elizabeth Jordan of Cornelia and Ella Mae Stamey of Demorest; brothers, Carl Stancil of Gainesville and Johnny Stancil of Cornelia; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 4:00 pm Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Roy Lee Mitchell and Pastor Anthony Shore officiating. Interment will follow in Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, Habersham County American Legion Post #84 and Rabun County D.A.V. Chapter #15. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Tuesday. The family is at the residence.
