Ira Thomas (Tom) Layfield

Ira Thomas (Tom) Layfield, 85, of Cumming, GA passed away on January 1, 2010. He was born in Milledgeville, GA on October 5, 1924.
A graduate of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA, he was also an alumna of Georgia Institute of Technology. Tom was married to Elaine Hill on December 17, 1948.
Tom was a Lt. Col. in the U. S. Marine Corps. During WWII he flew B 25s and was a transport pilot in the Korean War. After his military service, Tom joined GSA in an engineering capacity. He later became the Director of Engineering Services for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.
In addition to his beloved wife, Elaine, Tom is survived by his sons, Richard and Steven Layfield; daughters, Kathy Moreland and Pegi Fitton; five grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 4, 2009 in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 â
