Mrs. Peggy S. Cathey, 79 of Springdale Road, Gainesville died Tuesday November 3, 2009 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Born April 12, 1930 in Hazelhurst, Ga. Mrs. Cathey was the daughter of the late George Smith and Mary Lou White Sheridan. She moved to Gainesville in 1945 and graduated from Gainesville High School in 1946. She attended Shorter College in Rome, Ga. from 1946 until 1948 then summer school at Chapel Hill in June of 1948 and then college at the University of North Carolina and graduated in March of 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation Mrs. Cathey stayed on another quarter because she had met Bob Cathey and they were married on September 2, 1950 and moved back to Gainesville in 1951. Mrs. Cathey enjoyed her sewing and lunch groups, Bulli classes and the Joy Sunday School Class, baseball games, family trips, family dinners and making rolls and jelly, she also loved trips with her grandchildren to the beach and Spain, the Masters in Augusta and trips to Waynesville and Asheville. Mrs. Cathey loved gardening and working with her flowers, mainly her roses. She was a volunteer at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center for over 29 years. Mrs. Cathey was a member of the First Baptist Church on Green Street. Mrs. Cathey is preceded in death by her husband, Bob B. Cathey, son, George Harrison Cathey and grandson, Nathaniel Joe Cathey.
Memorial services will held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday November 5, 2009 in the First Baptist Church Chapel with The Rev. Dr. Bill Coates officiating. There will be a private family burial at Alta Vista Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the vestibule of the church before the service.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law; Carolyn and George Brinson, Gainesville, son; Bobby Cathey, Jr., Gainesville, grandchildren; Jacob Walther and Staci Brinson, Atlanta, Catherine and Wesley Bruce, Gainesville, and Bryan Sheridan Brinson, Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Our Faith Our Future at the First Baptist Church 751 Green Street Gainesville, GA 30501, or to the American Cancer Society 2565 Thompson Bridge Rd., Suite 114, Gainesville, GA 30501.
