John Waitzel Hood

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009 at New Hope United Methodist Church for John Waitzel Hood, 93, of Gainesville. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Larry Patton and Rev. Sidney Tate will officiate. Visitation will be at Little & Davenport Funeral Home on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Hood passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at home following a brief illness. Mr. Hood will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until service time.



The son of John Washington and Ada Conley Hood, he was born in Young Harris, GA. He moved to Forsyth County in 1986. He worked for 36 years for the Clorox Company as the S.E. Regional Engineer. He played basketball and tennis in college and was athlete of the year in 1935 at Young Harris College. He also played semi pro Basketball with the US Rubber company in Hogansville with the GA/AL Textile League. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.



In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife Blanche Hill Hood and son, John Woodie Hood.



Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law; Ed and Janice Hood of Kennesaw, Olin and Ruth Ann Hood of Hiawassee, daughter-in-law; Miriam Hood Davis of Jonesboro; wife; Matlyn Singleton Hood of Cumming, grandchildren; Pam and Charles Schrader of Evans, GA, Jeff and Gina Hood of Clermont, Kari and Scott King of Newnan, Ryan and Lauren Hood of Smyrna, Jason and Tracey Hood of Wellington, FL, and 8 great grandchildren.



In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to New Hope United Methodist Church in memory of John Hood.
