Julian Ray Barksdale, Jr.

Julian Ray Barksdale, Jr., beloved husband of Jean Stringer Barksdale, passed away September 3, 2009 in Northside Forsyth Hospital in Cumming, GA at age 79. He is preceded in death by parents Julian R. and Eunice J. Barksdale, and son David Michael Barksdale.


He is survived by his wife Jean of 48 years; brothers William Erwin Barksdale of Beaumont, TX and Richard Fulton Barksdale of Huntsville, AL; children Julian R. Barksdale, III of Madison, MS and Marty Barksdale Thomas of Cumming, GA; grandchildren Nathan Thomas, Ben Thomas, Caroline Thomas, Virginia Barksdale, Jacob Barksdale, and Alan Barksdale; son-in-law Christoper B. Thomas; daughters-in-law Jane Barksdale and Carrie Barksdale.


Julian grew up in rural Rankin County, Mississippi, graduating from Pisgah High School. He served in the U.S. army from 1951 to 1952, and soon after graduated with a B.S in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University in January, 1955. He was employed as a Bridge Designer for the MS State Highway Department from 1955 to 1967; a partner at Gaddis Engineering in Jackson, MS from 1967 to 1969; Assistant Bridge Engineer for the MS State Highway Department from 1969 until 1989; Manager and Vice President with Neal-Schaffer from 1989 until his retirement at the end of 2002.


In 2003, Julian and wife Jean relocated to Cumming, GA to enjoy their retirement years. Since then, he has been an active part of First Baptist Church of Cumming. He was a quiet man loved by many people, and who touched many lives. He will be missed terribly by everyone who knew him.


The family will receive visitors from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Saturday, September 5th at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, GA. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 6th at 3:00 pm at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens, Cumming, GA.
