Emma (Maw) Gray Bates

Emma "Maw" Gray Bates, 88 of Liberty, South Carolina was the matriarch of a family of 98, she was born in Laurel, County Kentucky on March 12, 1921 and died on Saturday August 8, 2009.

She was next to the oldest of 22 children born to the Rev. Garrett and Liddie Gray.

She is survived by a daughter, Oma Powers, Liberty, SC; and a daughter adopted by love Mona Sue Dodd of Waleska, Ga.; she has 8 grandchildren; Shirley and David Canon, Valdosta, Ga; Joel and Ann Bates, Liberty, SC; Charles and Judy Bates, Belton, SC; Dale and Rae Bates, Liberty, SC; Charlene and Daniel Christian, Danielsville, Ga; Rose and Earl Guthrie, Parker Co., Kevin Bales, Waleska, Ga.; Angela and Carl Rampley, Waleska, Ga.

Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Harold Bates of Hall County, Ga. and granddaughter Terena Napier of Wooster, OH.

The number 98 includes all grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

The center of her life was her love of the Lord Jesus Christ and she taught all her family this love.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday August 11, 2009 at the Whitehall Baptist Church. The Rev. Carlton Bates and the Rev. Melvin Baugh will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family visitation will be held Monday August 10, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and the public visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Monday also.
