Dean L. Strickland, Sr.

Dean L. Strickland, Sr., age 71, of Cornelia, Georgia, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Strickland was born on March 1, 1938 in Monroe County, Georgia to the late Ezekiel and Ora Mae Pugh Strickland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jean Strickland. Mr. Strickland was a United States Navy veteran having bravely served his country for 27 years including the Vietnam War. He was of the Presbyterian Faith and was a member of the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F & AM and the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720. Mr. Strickland was previously on the zoning committee for the City of Cornelia and was retired from the Lee Arrendale State Correctional institute in Alto.

Survivors include: his daughters and sons-in-law: Gloria Denise and Bruce Maddox, Helen, GA; Deanna and Jeff Standridge, Gillsville, GA; his sons: Dean L. Strickland, Jr., Cornelia, GA; Daniel L. Strickland, Cornelia, GA: his sisters and brothers-in-law: Virginia and Dr. E.W. Holloway, Macon, GA; Kathleen and Bobby Waldrop, Helen, GA; his grandchildren: Adam Strickland, Andrew Strickland, and Brittany Strickland, all of Cornelia, GA; Anna Maddox, Helen, GA; Mitch Standridge and Madison Standridge, both of Gillsville, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia with Rev. Bill Calhoun officiating. Interment will follow in the V.F.W. Memorial Park with Masonic rites performed by the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F & A M and military honors provided by The Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, The Rabun County DAV Chapter #15, and The Habersham County American Legion Post #84.

The family will receive friends at the South Chapel from 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday.
