A time of visitation will be held at Little & Davenport Funeral Home on Monday June 1, 2009 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. for Mrs. Emily Brown James, 91, who passed away in Gainesville on May 28, 2009. Graveside services will be held following the visitation at Cartecay United Methodist Church Cemetery, Ellijay, Ga. with the Rev. Hugh Cauthen.
Born in Wilkes County, GA, on October 19, 1917, Mrs. James was born the daughter of the late Burrell Ficklen and Kate Smith Brown of Washington, Ga. She was a graduate of the
University of Georgia and was a long time educator who taught in several schools in Ga. Mrs. James taught for many years at Main Street Elementary School in Gainesville, GA and retired from Lyman Hall Elementary School in 1980 after 42 years of teaching. Mrs. James was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Howard B. James. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Survivors include nieces: Kathy Grosham, Katherine Spratlin, and Laura Toburen and nephews: Blakey Brown, and David Wickersham and special friends: Freddie Nicely and Carolyn Sims.
A special thank you goes to the administrators and staff of New Horizons North Nursing Home who gave Emily such good care and allowed her to indulge in her love of reading books.
