Ivie Funeral Home announces services for Mrs. Sue Tallant Cooke, 83 of Commerce who died
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at her residence due to complications from a fall in January.
Mrs. Cooke was born in Canton, Georgia on February 3, 1926 to the late Tom and Fannie Martin Tallant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Philip R. Cooke, a sister, Martha Woods of California and a granddaughter, Patricia Ann Vaughn. She was a
member of Rogers Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cooke served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a statistician for the Pentagon during the Korean War. During a training session in Denver, Colorado she met her late husband, Philip R. Cooke who was stationed at Fort Walton Beach, Florida. After a year long-distance relationship, they married on July 1, 1950. During their marriage they lived in Florida, Newfoundland, New Jersey and Georgia. They were married for 52 years before Mr. Cooke passed away in 2002.
In addition to her time served in the Air Force, Mrs. Cooke was a homemaker, a member of a
garden club, a member of the local VFW, served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary for the
Commerce Veterans of Foreign War Post 5279, served as commander of the local American
Legion, was a volunteer for the 4-H Club, a Cub Scout leader, a florist, an Activities Director for several local nursing homes, a chef after having received her culinary degree in her sixties, a folk artist whose artwork was shown and sold in New York City and Birmingham and locally in Commerce and Winder. She was a loving Mother and Grandmother. She encouraged her grandchildren to study hard and instilled in them a passion for reading, traveling, cooking, sewing, gardening and much more.
Survivors include five children and their families, Diane and Henry Vaughn of Homer; Alan and Connie Cooke of Commerce and their children, Cohen and Katie; Anna Porter of Commerce and her children Jamie Porter and Allison Watson; Phyllis Cooke of Commerce and her daughters, Christy Epps and Dana Westmoreland; Samuel and Sandra Cooke of Commerce and their son, J.T. Whitsel. One brother, Pete Tallant of Roswell, also survives.
Graveside services and interment for Mrs. Sue Tallant Cooke will be conducted on Thursday at 11 AM from the Jackson Memorial Park with Rev. Canton Peters officiating. The family will
receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM and at other times at the residence located at 435 Old Bold Springs School Rd.in Commerce. Memorials may be made to the Rogers Baptist Church.
