Louisa McIntosh Edwards

Obituary Date: Monday, February 23, 2009
Louisa McIntosh Edwards of Atlanta and Rabun Gap, Georgia, died of complications from breast cancer on Monday, February 23, at her home on Black Rock Mountain.
Louisa graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1947, and in that same year, she married her first husband, Preston McIntosh, an Atlanta architect. After his death in 1966, she founded her own interior design firm, Louisa McIntosh Interiors, and in 1977 she opened the doors to the McIntosh Gallery, which she owned and managed until her retirement in 1997. The McIntosh Gallery became an Atlanta institution, representing a stable of artists known nationally and internationally, including Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Benny Andrews.
Beyond her involvement in the Atlanta arts community, Louisa served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library, President of the Midtown Business Association (now the Midtown Alliance), and member of the Art Advisory Committee for Agnes Scott College. She continued working as an art consultant following her retirement. In addition to her numerous civic and professional commitments, Louisa was a devoted mother and grandmother who always made time for her family. In 1998 she married John R. Edwards, and they enjoyed eleven years of love, companionship, and travel together.
Louisa is survived by her husband John R. Edwards; her four children, Alexa McIntosh Selph, Stuckey McIntosh, Peter McIntosh, and Patricia McIntosh; her grandchildren Holly and Alex Selph, Preston and Warren Palmer, and Rosser and Vera McIntosh; sister Mary Samford; and son-in-law Michael Selph.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 26 at 2:00 pm at St. James Episcopal Church in Clayton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hambridge Center in Rabun Gap or to Agnes Scott College.
