William Troy Simpson

William Troy Simpson, age 75 of Cornelia, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Habersham County on August 5, 1933, he was the son of the late William Gordon and Burnice Stewart Simpson. Troy was a graduate of the Habersham County School System and served in the Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia for two years. He returned to Habersham County where he was self employed for a number of years in the used car business and was partner for Stovall Motor Company for 35 years. During this time, he served as a Habersham County Commissioner for 12 years and as a State Highway Board Member for over 10 years, where he was instrumental in the development of Highway 365. He was a member of Hazel Creek Baptist Church and a Habersham County Rotarian. He was a kind father, loving grandfather, and great friend who will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by son, Michael Simpson; grandmother, Mrs. Starl Simpson and aunt, Dora Simpson, who raised him from age three.
Surviving are son, Mitchell Calvin Simpson and wife, Catherine Bruce Simpson of Cornelia; grandson, Michael McGregor Bruce Simpson of Cornelia; granddaughter, Katie Rae Simpson of Cornelia; daughter-in-law, Karen Batson Simpson of Cornelia; former wife, Elsie Simpson Hogan of Mt. Airy; and caregiver, Victor Cadenas of Mt. Airy.
Funeral services are 2:00 pm Sunday, November 23, 2008, from the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin and Stewart with Pastor Steve Fenlon and Rev. Billy Burrell officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Lisa Graves officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 pm on Friday and from 6-8 pm on Saturday.
