Mrs. Sheryl Hudson Askew

Mrs. Sheryl Hudson Askew, age 57, of Lula died March 13, 2005, after an extended illness. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. March 16, 2005, at Concord Baptist Church.

Born in Dublin and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hudson Jr., Mrs. Askew was a graduate of Dublin High School and later the University of Georgia, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in education with a minor in music. After graduation Mrs. Askew was employed by the Dublin City School System as a first grade teacher at Johnson Street Elementary School. She later taught at Wauka Mountain Elementary in Gainesville for 14 years. Working closely with the arts and school programs, Mrs. Askew was instrumental in bringing an increased awareness of the arts into the area to show the schools' appreciation to the partners in education.

Mrs. Askew annually organized and presented a Christmas program to the many local groups of businesses and organizations that supported Wauka Mountain Elementary School. A member of the leadership team, she was actively involved, not only in the needs and concerns of the school and community, but also in such fund-raising activities as the Fall Festival, breakfast with Santa and the Chicken Pie Supper. A dedicated and passionate teacher, Mrs. Askew was honored by the Teacher of the Year Award in 1996 and 1997.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and all the children whose lives she so greatly enriched. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Secret Garden, PTO, Wauka Mountain Elementary, 5850 Brookton-Lula Road, Gainesville, GA 30506.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn, and son, Jamey Askew of Lula; daughter-in-law, Amy Askew; grandchildren, Sheryl Askew, Kayla Caddell and Jadah Martin; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hudson Jr. of Dublin; siblings and brothers-in-law, Connie and Rickey Schultz of Cary, Sally and Glenn Northcutt of Dothan, Ala., and Paul Hudson III of Dublin; niece, Paula Hudson of Cochran; and nephew, Glenn P. Northcutt of Dothan, Ala. Mrs. Askew was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace J. Askew Jr. The family will receive friends at Strickland Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.
