Gaines Stallard "Shorty" Robinson

A private service will be held for Gaines Stallard Robinson, Tuesday October 10, 2006 in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Robinson was born August 24, 1920 to Lemuel and Lena Robinson of Lynchfield, Virginia.

July 3, 1941 he joined the United States Army and was sent to war in July of 1942. He was captured May 3, 1943 by German troops and held prisoner for 5 months before escaping. Following his escape he spent 9 months behind enemy lines before reaching American troops. He returned to American soil in June of 1944.

Mr. Robinson received his P.O.W. medal of honor from the Honorable Nathan Deal on Veterans Day 2003, sixty years after he was captured.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peggy (Snow) Robinson; sons and daughters-in-law, Alan (Butch) and Dianne Robinson; and Ken and Annette Robinson; daughters, Deb Bailey and Melissa Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Cindy Edwards; grandchildren, Dawn Robinson, Kelley Flanigan, Gaines Robinson; Ryan and Ashley Edwards and 3 great-grandchildren all of Gainesville; brother and sister-in-law, L.B. and Grace Robinson, Gainesville; sister-in-law, Bobbie Robinson, Lula and sister, Frances Robinson, Huntsville, Tennessee.

Memorial Park Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
