Roy S. Dunaway, Jr.

Obituary Date: Wednesday, August 6, 2025

Roy S. Dunaway Jr., age 94, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025 in Gainesville, Georgia. He was born on August 27, 1930, in Clewiston, Florida.

Roy was a devoted husband and father, proud veteran, and beloved friend, grandfather and great-grandfather whose humor and kindness touched all who knew him.

He grew up in Savannah, Georgia and after attending the Marion Military Institute in Alabama, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1955.  At West Point, he competed in intercollegiate lacrosse and was named an All-American. Roy served for 30 years in the U.S. Army as an Infantry Officer, earning the Distinguished Service Medal and a Bronze Star as well as his Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, and Combat Infantryman Badge. He earned a Master’s Degree at the University of Alabama and became a lifelong Crimson Tide football fan. He was instrumental in the Army’s development of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, greatly enhancing both the effectiveness and safety of United States Army infantry soldiers. His distinguished career included assignments in the United States, Europe, Vietnam, and Korea. He commanded a battalion in the 82nd Airborne Division and later a brigade in the 2nd Infantry Division.

Following his retirement from active duty, Roy continued his life of service as a Children’s Sunday School Teacher and a Senior Lay Minister for the State of Alabama. He participated in multiple mission trips and led Men’s Bible Study at Lanier Village Estates where he lived. Deeply committed to his faith and community, he also pursued his passion for collecting, earning the affectionate nickname “Flea Market Monster” from his family.

Roy was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Ann Stubbs Dunaway. He is survived by his children: Ruthi Breazeale, Susan Boler (John Boler), Cindy Ray, and Roy S. Dunaway III. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Nathan Breazeale, Kevin Boler (Brooke), Laura Ann Boler, Jack Boler (Sierra), Annie Ray, and Sarah Ray. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Larkin Hawks, Cypress Hawks, Penelope Boler, Whit Boler, and Jude Boler.

A memorial service will be held at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, Georgia, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 PM. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Roy’s remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Christian Appalachian Project, St. Judes, or a veterans' support organization. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Lanier Village Estates for their loving care and support.
