Erle Miles passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025. He was 88 and a half years old. He left us with wonderful memories that will keep us all smiling and laughing for years. Erle’s friendly and happy personality made him a special favorite to everyone he met. He was loved by many and was described by his friends at Phoenix on Lake Lanier as an icon who will be greatly missed.
Erle was a hard worker and took pride in all that he did. His last job on this earth was pushing in all of the dining room chairs after each meal for the residents at Phoenix, which he did with perfection. Erle retired from the company he started, Testing Services, at the young age of 80. Testing Services (TSI) was Erle’s legacy to his son, who worked side by side with him for over 35 years. The business continues today as a thriving independent testing company conducting testing of carpet, hard services, artificial turf, and playgrounds all over the country. Erle could not be more proud of his son.
Erle was born to Erle, Sr. and Maude Terrell Miles. His father was a pilot for Eastern Airlines and a farmer in Roswell. His mother was a teacher who loved all things artistic. Erle obtained his college education at Presbyterian College. During his school breaks, he worked as a professional photographer for the Atlanta Journal and Erle had many hilarious stories from his escapades during these years. One fateful summer, he took a surveying job for an oil company which led him to Wakefield, Virginia, where he met the love of his life, Kay. They had been married over 66 years at Erle’s death and lived almost their entire married life in Dalton, the carpet capital of the world.
Erle loved his family deeply and they were the center of everything that he did. He worked hard in order to provide his two children with a college education plus a law school education for his daughter, Kelly, who has practiced law in Gainesville for over 41 years. Both of Erle’s children were active in sports throughout school and Erle and Kay rarely missed an event. Erle served as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He kept an immaculate yard and was a handy man who could fix anything. Erle loved ice cream and visiting Wakefield. Pop Pop’s real joy though were his two granddaughters and the giggles were endless when they were together. He loved all of his dogs and enjoyed sitting on his back porch watching the birds, chipmunks, squirrels and anything else that moved. Quite simply, Erle loved life.
Erle is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Kay) Revelle Miles; his daughter and daughter-in- law, Kelly Anne Miles and Mandy Smith; his son and his wonderful daughters, Erle White Miles, III, RyLee Anne Miles and Addison White Miles; his sister, Margaret Anne (Maggie) Mitchell; and his sister-in-law and her son, Sandra Revelle Goodwyn and Wade H. Goodwyn, IV. Erle was especially blessed with the love and support of his special friends: Marcia Helton, Jamieson Allen, Nancy Colston, Sadie Garnett (deceased), and Myra Monreal. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful caregivers and staff at Phoenix on Lake Lanier who loved Erle and joked with him endlessly as he cruised the place in his electric wheelchair always with a huge smile and a wave of the hand.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that you enjoy a smile and a laugh with someone in honor of Erle.
