Velma Marie Hare Carswell

Mrs. Velma Marie Hare Carswell, age 88 of Toccoa passed away Monday, July 28, 2025 at The Oaks-Limestone, Gainesville, Georgia.

A daughter of the late Harrison Arklus Hare and Margie Cooper Hare, she was born August 5, 1936 in Oconee County, South Carolina having lived most of her life in Stephens County.  She was employed with Wright Manufacturing for a number of years and later opened her own business called The Lace Place.  She was of the Baptist faith and had attended Rock Creek Baptist many years ago. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loved to cook for her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Douglas Carswell, Sr. in 2009 and by two sisters Elizabeth Benfield and Jeanette Holbrooks.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joe Douglas “Doug” Carswell, Jr. and Nancy of Simpsonville, South Carolina; two daughters, Brenda Carswell of Hoschton, Georgia and Sandra Ryals of Eastanollee, Georgia; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will Wednesday, July 30, 2025, 11 a.m. in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Reverend Ken Jackson officiating.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers and should assemble at the funeral home by 10:30, Mark Carswell, Rich Long, Rodney Stinespring, Sean Stinespring, Kinney Rivers and Gary Bohannon.

The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service time at 11:00 a.m.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.acree-davisfh.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Oaks-Limestone, 2560 Flintridge Road, NE, Gainesville, Georgia 30501 in memory of Mrs. Velma Carswell.

Interment will follow in the Rock Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with The Reverend Ken Jackson officiating.
