Randall Gary Smith

Obituary Date: Tuesday, July 15, 2025

Mr. Randall Gary Smith passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 in Gainesville, Georgia. He was born on September 12, 1956 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Clarence and Katheleen “Kemp” Smith.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a truly remarkable soul - a selfless, God-Fearing man whose life was defined by love, integrity, and nurturing care for everyone around him.

He was a quiet protector, always placing others before himself, offering guidance, comfort, and strength without asking for anything in return. His faith in God was unwavering, and it was reflected in the way he lived: humble, kind and full of grace.

His joy was found in the little things- especially the treasure hunts of thrifting, where he could turn something simple into something special. He had a gift for seeing beauty where others overlooked it, both in objects and in people.

His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the love he gave so freely. He leaves behind family and friends who will forever be grateful for his presence, his prayers, and his powerful example of a life well-lived.

He will be missed deeply, remembered always, and cherished eternally.

He retired from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office as a Lieutenant in the Uniform Patrol Division after 32 years of service, after retiring he returned to the Department and was appointed to the rank of Captain and Commanded the Crime Suppression Unit. During his career he was best known for helping people in the community. He took great pleasure in helping people from all walks of life. Many new officers spent their first day on patrol riding with Smith. During his career he was selected as Officer of the Year and received many civic awards including the Woodman of the World Life Saving Award. He served under 4 different Hall County Sheriffs.

Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lamar Smith; and nephews, Tony and Brannon Smith.

He is survived by his siblings, Mitchell Smith of Gainesville, Ga and Milton Smith of Gainesville, Ga, Linda Black of Gainesville, Ga, Bob Botts (Tammy) of Florida, and Mark Payne (Kelley) of Gainesville, Ga; niece, Nishala McFarland (Ronny) of Gainesville, Ga; nephews, Bobby Botts (Kayla) of Florida, Jared Smith (Kim) of Gainesville, Ga, Timmy Smith (Cindy) of Gainesville, Ga, Derek Smith (Danielle) of Gainesville, Ga, Newman Smith (Samantha) of Gainesville, Ga and Tyler Payne of Gainesville, Ga; and several special nieces and nephews, Bryan, Lindsey, Zoey, Tucker, Austin, Nick, Amelia, Ansleigh, Abby and Cohen, and many other friends & family.

In accordance to his wishes there will be no service or visitation to be held.

Instead of mourning Gary Smith, please take the time to spend it with your loved ones and praise the Lord. That is how he lived and that is how he would want to be remembered.
