There are people who leave a mark on the world—not in the grand gestures, but in the quiet, funny, generous, and deeply loving ways they show up for the people they care about. That was James Walter Dinnan, our Jim, Jimmy, Dad, Pop.
James Walter Dinnan, 75, of Cleveland, Georgia, passed away on July 1, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on August 7, 1949, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to the late Dr. and Mrs. James and Louise Dinnan. He lived in New York and Pennsylvania before moving to Georgia as an adult. He served our country in the Army, graduated from the University of Georgia, and spent his career in transportation management. He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Matthew James Dinnan and brother, Thomas Patrick Dinnan.
Jim was known for his unwavering dedication to his wife, Paula Jo and to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed cruising and traveling to more than 20 countries and all 50 states. Jim was an avid reader, a skillsman who could build anything, and loved hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Jo; his children Kaitlyn (Austin) Brown, Joy (Dylan Miller) Dinnan, Sandee (Michael) George, daughter-in-law Krysten Norman, and grandchildren Addison Hicks, Jackson Hicks, Reagan George, Matthew Dinnan, AnnaReese George, Collins Brown, Knox Miller, Shuler Brown, Anniston Brown, and Lydia Allgood; sisters, Jane (Amnon Levi) Dinnan and Barbara Dinnan; brother Joseph Dinnan; brothers-in-law Dennis (Janet) Duncan, Deryl (Brenda) Duncan, Wendell Duncan, Richard Duncan, Max (Katie) Duncan, Gary Lewis; sister-in-law Jenny Duncan, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on July 3, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM with the US Army Honor Guard presentation at 3:45 PM, at Barrett Funeral Home in Cleveland, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in his memory to Adult Literacy Jackson (PO Box 113, Pendergrass, GA 30567).
At the request of Jim, a burial at sea will take place where he, along with his son, Matthew, will be laid to rest.
