Ray Dean Cox, age 95, of Carrollton, entered his heavenly home on June 7, 2025, and was cremated in accordance with his wishes. Born October 17, 1929, in Toccoa, Ga. Ray’s parents Clayton Cox and Ola Mae Cheek Cox preceded him in death. Rays Father died when he was 9 years old and he had to work on his grandfather’s farm to help support the family. After graduation at Stephens County High school, he joined the Army Air Corps. He served as a medical and surgical tech until March 6 th , 1951. Sometime after discharge he took a job in the Fisher Body Division of General Motors. He married Virgina Sprayberry Bennett in Newnan Ga in 1962. She had a son from a previous marriage, Timothy Bennett. Timothy was adopted by Ray. After his retirement from GM, he had a passion for painting houses part-time. In his free time Ray was a football fan, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
Ray was a member of Dahlonega Baptist Church. Ray received several community service awards through General Motors. He earned an excellence in community activity award, was a member of Lions Club International, a Member of the American Legion, and also a member of the Masons and became a Master Mason. In 1999 they moved to Dahlonega GA and lived there until December 2024. They moved to Carrollton GA to be near family. Ray was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. Including Faye (Enlow) Garland, Lavern (Gadson) Floyd, Betty (Glen) Garner, and Marvin Sloan. Ray is survived by his beloved wife Virgina S Cox, son Timothy (Debby) Bennett, Grand children Ryan (Tracey) Bennett, and Paulina Bennett. Great Grand children Corrine Bennett, and Tegan Bennett. Also survived by Annette Sloan, Ruth (Ronnie) Plunkett, Richard (Paige) Garner, Carolyn and Clayton Kelley, Angela (Jim) Bishop, Melissa (Ron) Emeneker and their children.
A memorial service will be held in Ray’s honor at Dahlonega Baptist Church on July 17, 2025, at 11:00am. Reverend Bill Hutchison will be officiating. Grave side service will be held at Georgia National Veterans Cemetery at a later date. The family is being served by Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home in Dahlonega Ga. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Dahlonega Baptist Church Building Fund.
