Honey Lou Funkhouser

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 1, 2025

Honey Lou Funkhouser, beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, and dancer, passed away
peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of grace, strength, and unwavering passion. Born in
Evansville, Indiana, on December 28, 1931, Honey Lou's name was a testament to her father's
devotion and her lifelong sparkle.

Her dance journey began at age eight and never ceased. Trained in ballet, jazz, and tap under the
direction of renowned instructors, she spent summers perfecting her craft in New York and began
teaching by 17. She later earned a scholarship to Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia, where
she majored in Speech and Drama, graduated magna cum laude, led as Student Government
President, and was honored with the Mary Margaret Sullivan Award.

In 1954, she married the love of her life, Captain George Nelson Funkhouser, and together they
built a life full of creativity, family, and adventure—from running a farm in Virginia to building a
home featured in House & Garden magazine.

Honey Lou opened her own dance studio in Warrenton, Virginia, where generations of students
were inspired by her motto: There is no such word as ‘can’t.’ She only wanted her students to
reach their personal capabilities—and they did.

A devoted educator, she also taught gymnastics and choreographed the musicals Oklahoma,
Oliver, and The Fantasticks at Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Virginia, blending discipline
with imagination. She believed that teaching was a team effort with the musicals and instilled
responsibility and confidence in every student she mentored.

Later, she earned her Master’s in Education with a minor in Dance from George Washington
University—redefining resilience with every step.

Even in retirement, Honey Lou’s spirit never slowed. From performing in the historical drama
The Lost Colony at age 45 to immersing herself in garden design, she cultivated beauty
everywhere she went. As a dedicated member of The Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, she
served as President of the Shenandoah District and as State Treasurer. She was also certified with
the National Association of Parliamentarians and served as a Flower Show Judge and Landscape
Design Critic. Honey Lou’s creativity also found expression in dance ministry with her local
church.

She is survived by her children, Lynné, Gregg, and Doug; grandchildren Taylor Anne, Garrett,
Tess, and Kurt; and great-grandchildren Reese, Gavin, William, and Johanna. They, along with
all who knew her, carry forward her fierce love, radiant optimism, and the indelible mark of a life
beautifully lived.
