Gary "Whit" Whitfield, age 80, of Homer, Georgia went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
Mr. Whitfield was born on August 30, 1944 in Banks County, Georgia to the late Hubert Whitfield and Gertrude Caudell Whitfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Carolyn Purcell, Wansa Purcell, Sue Vern Moore, Genell Williams. Gary had retired from the University of Georgia, where he dedicated over 14 years of service as a skilled carpenter. His craftsmanship and dedication to his work were admired by many. A faithful member of Charity Baptist Church, Gary not only led the choir for many years with a joyful heart but also used his carpentry talents to help build and maintain the church that meant so much to him. A man of deep devotion, Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. To his family, he will forever be remembered for his respectful and humble nature, his unwavering work ethic, and his warm and dependable presence. He never met a stranger and never left a loved one without saying, “I love you.” In the eyes of his friends and his community, Gary was a man of many talents, a true jack of all trades. Whether he was tending to his farm or helping others with their needs, Gary's kindness, generosity, and hardworking spirit touched countless lives.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Lynn Payne Whitfield, of Homer; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisia and Chris Moore, of Pensacola, FL; Tina and James Willis, of Homer; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Laurie Whitfield, of Elberton; son, Barry Whitfield, of Homer; grandchildren, Jessica Moore, Jennifer Lira, Christopher Willis, Casey Willis, MaKayla Carey, Avery Whitfield; great-grandchildren, Amber Lavelle, Bentley Lira, Whit Carey; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Yvonne Whitfield, of Mt. Airy; Lamar and Debbie Whitfield, of Clarkesville; sister, Linda Poole, of Homer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2025 at the Charity Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Reese and Rev. Billy Burrell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel and from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2025 at the church prior to the service.
