Steven Edwin Milam

Obituary Date: Thursday, May 22, 2025

It is with deep sadness and great love that we announce that Steven (Steve) Edwin Milam of Dacula, Georgia, traded his captain wings for angel wings on May 22, 2025, at the age of 63. In the spring of 2023, Steve was unexpectedly diagnosed with aggressive esophageal cancer, which he faced with remarkable strength and bravery. Steve lived a full and meaningful life, defined by his strong work ethic, endless knowledge, and unwavering commitment to—and generosity for—those he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Krista (Tooley) Milam; his two children, Jordan and Jonathan Milam; his mother, Peggy Ann Milam; his father, Larry Jeanes Milam; and several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Michelle (Milam) Davis, and his grandparents, Charles and Virginia Whitmore, and Quentin and Marie Milam.

Steve grew up in Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte, NC, graduating from Myers Park High School in 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1987. From a young age, Steve knew he wanted to be a pilot. He pursued that dream, beginning his career at American Eagle Airlines in November of 1987 before joining Delta Air Lines in May of 1997. There, he flew a 727 as a flight engineer, and six months later became a first officer on an MD88, 757, and A321. Ten years later, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a captain on the MD88 and A321. Steve took early retirement in 2023 following his cancer diagnosis. His dedication and love for aviation inspired many and provided a wonderful life for his family. Each time we look to the sky and see an airplane, may we be reminded of Steve and his lifelong passion for flying.

Steve’s interests were many and varied. The NFL, NASCAR, and golf were constants on the television, but he was always ready for a laugh—or a tear—when America’s Got Talent aired. The sounds of Pink Floyd and Rush often filled his home, and he had countless stories from the concerts he attended. Steve loved adventure, always leading his family to be first in line for the tallest rollercoasters at every amusement park. He found joy in being near the water, whether boating at Lake Lanier or diving into a pool. And no pet was ever left behind—Steve had a deep, abiding love for animals.

Although it was difficult for him to say goodbye to loved ones in the end, Steve found peace knowing he was going to a place free of pain. He leaves behind countless treasured memories and was deeply grateful for the love and support he received throughout his cancer battle. Steve will be greatly missed and forever loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 3:00 PM with visitation from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel & Gardens in Buford, Georgia. An additional celebration of life will be held in Owensboro, Kentucky, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Esophageal Cancer Action Network or Furkids, a no-kill animal shelter in Atlanta.
