We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Charles Henry Gibbons at the age of 69. Henry was born on March 13, 1956 to Harry Meikleham Gibbons and Edith Ann Lucas at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He had three siblings: Anne Dykes, Sally Oglesby, and Mike Gibbons. Henry was blessed to have Mike as his older brother, who always looks out for him – up to his last days.
He leaves behind a daughter, Anne Gibbons, who is 25 years old. Henry lived in Brookhaven all his life and often said how proud he was to have been born and raised there. Also left behind to cherish his memory are two nephews, Brian Dykes and John Dykes, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Henry made an impression on everyone he met with his humor and charisma. If you went anywhere with him, you were likely to run into a friend, old neighbor, or former client from his storied career in sales. After graduating high school, he began a long career in sales, later transitioning into a successful career in insurance, and eventually moving into real estate.
Henry was proudly sober and celebrated his sobriety birthday – December 7, 1989 – every year. There likely wasn’t an AA meeting in metro Atlanta that he hadn’t attended at least once. His community in AA was a lifeline to him, and he always loved helping newer members on their journey to sobriety. His persistence and presence made him an inspiration to many and a lesson to others.
He grew up on Humility Lane, just down the street from Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School and Church. Henry attended OLA for elementary school. He was a lifelong parishioner and a strong Catholic. He was also an avid Tennessee football fan and attended several games. He loved walking with his daughter to the church playground on weekends, and he often took her out to eat – usually for ribeye steaks or lemon pepper wings.
Henry loved telling stories, and he loved giving people stories to tell. His favorite person to tell stories to was his daughter. He made her laugh whenever he could, even when he didn’t feel like laughing himself. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, persistence, and deep love for his only daughter.
He will be missed, and his memory will be kept alive by his family, friends, and community. His love for his daughter will outlast him – which is exactly what he would have wanted.
Henry was preceded in death by father, Harry Gibbons and mother, Edith Ann Lucas Gibbons.
