Caroline Romberg Silcox

Obituary Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2025

Caroline Romberg Silcox passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 14, 2025. She had been battling congestive heart failure. Born September 28, 1936, in Gainesville, Georgia, she was the second child born to Conrad Julius Romberg and Marian Elizabeth Ashford Romberg.

Caroline graduated from Gainesville High School in 1954 and Agnes Scott College in 1958 where she majored in vocal performance and minored in political science. While at Agnes Scott, she was set up on a blind date by her older brother, George Romberg, with his Chi Phi Fraternity brother at Emory University. The fraternity brother was Daniel Hal Silcox Jr. Over the next few years, the relationship between Caroline and Hal fully blossomed, and they were married August 31, 1957. They remained happily married for almost sixty-five years until his passing in July 2022.

After Hal graduated from Emory Dental School in 1958, he was one of three graduates chosen to serve in the Army Dental Corp. This appointment led Caroline and Hal to San Antonio for his training. Next, they were posted at Fort Rucker in Daleville, Alabama. While there, their first child, Katherine Elizabeth (Beth), was born on December 31, 1958. After completing their military obligations, they moved to Atlanta to start dental practice in Collier Hills. Their second child, Daniel Hal III, was born on January 12, 1961. On the advice of Caroline’s father, they moved to Gainesville later in 1961 for Hal to practice dentistry and for Caroline to teach school. She taught American and Georgia History at Gainesville Junior High School until she felt her young children needed her more than the school.

As the children entered school, free time allowed Caroline to participate in community activities such as the Crabapple Garden Club (president twice), the Gainesville Chorale, the First United Methodist Flower Guild, and the Gainesville Junior League. After eleven years in the league, after serving in several board positions, including president (1973-1974), she became a sustaining member. As Beth and Hal entered college, Caroline was employed by Hall County as a Voter Registrar and Jury Commissioner.

While involved with flower arranging at First United Methodist, she was privileged to attend the National Garden Club’s Flower Show School and the Church Flower Arranging Workshop at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Caroline became a Master Flower Show Judge, a member of Creative Study Club, and served on the North Georgia Council of Flower Show Judges. She was also an accredited American Daffodil Society Judge and Georgia Daffodil Society member.

Known as “the flower lady”, Caroline started her own business, “Designs Beautiful”, in 1989. Her business created arrangements and flowers for weddings, receptions, parties, civic functions, and funerals. Eventually, The Garden Club of Georgia became her focus. Caroline served as Chair of two Flower Show Schools, Symposium Chair, Laurel District Director, two terms as GCG Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, Trustees Chair, First Vice President, and then finally President (2011-2013).

Caroline is survived by her daughter Beth Maentz (Tom), her son Hal III (Deborah), as well as her grandchildren Elizabeth Ashford Silcox, Thomas Scott Maentz III, Daniel Louis Maentz, and Daniel Hal Silcox IV, MD. She is also survived by her siblings George J. Romberg (Sandra) and Connie M. Romberg Thompson. She was predeceased by her brothers Carl B. Romberg II and John C. Romberg. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Gainesville First United Methodist Church or the Garden Club of Georgia Scholarship Fund (https://gardenclubofgeorgia.org/membership-scholarships/) .

A memorial service will be held at Gainesville First United Methodist Church, 2780 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30506 on June 28, 2025, at 11:00 am followed by a celebration of life reception at the Chattahoochee Country Club, 300 Club Drive.
