James Horace Smallwood, Jr.

Obituary Date: Friday, May 9, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Horace Smallwood, Jr. “Jim”, who left this world peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025 in Panama City Beach, FL, at the age of 70. A man of unwavering character and quiet strength, Jim was known by all who loved him as dependable, kind-hearted, and steadfast in his values.

Born in Gainesville, GA, on October 29, 1954 to the late Horace and Sara (Propes) Smallwood. Jim lived a life rooted in love, music, and faith. He was a devoted husband, a supportive brother, a loving father and stepfather, and a proud grandfather. His family was the heartbeat of his life, and he gave of himself freely—always showing up, always steady, always caring.

A lifelong lover of music, Jim found joy and expression behind a drum set. From his early years as a drummer to his time playing in the worship band at church, he offered his talent as both a gift and an act of worship. His musical soul resonated deeply with the sounds of the Allman Brothers Band, whose rhythms became a soundtrack to his life.

A loyal Georgia fan, Jim could always be found in front of the TV, cheering the Bulldogs on during Saturdays in the Fall.

More than anything, Jim was a man you could count on. He lived with integrity, led with humility, and loved with depth. His presence was a comfort, his word was his bond, and his legacy is one of faith, family, and music.

He adored his wife, Connie.  Their bond was a beautiful example of love, partnership and devotion.  Together, they shared a life filled with laughter, music and unwavering support.

Along with his loving wife, Connie Smallwood, Jim is survived by his children- Liz Smallwood and Anna Carter (Justin), Stepchildren- Brian Gallagher, Greg Gallagher, Meggie Fields (Daniel), siblings- Darryl Smallwood (Janice), Kathy Head (Scott), Stacey Covey (Andy), grandchildren- Jeremiah, Tinsley, Cruz, Asher, Marlo, and nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his father Horace Smallwood and mother Sarah Propes Smallwood.

A celebration of life will be held on June 1, 2025 at 3:00 pm, at Riverbend Church (1715 Cleveland Highway, Gainesville, GA 30501) with a visitation to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research (www.michaeljfox.org/give).  His rhythm and love will echo in our hearts forever.
