Joyce Abernathy Kincaid, 93, passed away on May 3, 2025 after a long and fulfilling life.
Joyce was born on February 26, 1932 in Anadarko, Oklahoma to Fannie and Joe Abernathy. Pop had wanderlust and the family moved several times during her childhood finally ending up back in Anadarko where she graduated high school in 1950.
In November of 1950 the family made their way to Georgia where they settled in the Dial Community of Fannin County. Joyce met her future husband, Donald Kincaid, when she became a waitress at Earls Lakeside Restaurant in Blue Ridge. They married in March of 1954 and made their home with their three children in Cobb County.
Joyce worked for Southern Bell/AT&T from 1953 until she retired in 1988. She started as a cord board operator at 51 Ivy in Atlanta. She completed her career as Manager- Operator Services in Smyrna.
Joyce and Don moved back to the mountains they loved in Dial and built their retirement home where they enjoyed their friends and country life until Don passed away in 2003.
Joyce wrote her autobiography, From the Prairie to the Pines, in 2007 as a labor of love for her family. She remained at their mountain home enjoying painting, gardening, and antiquing until 2021 when she decided to sell her home and move in with her daughter and son-in-law in Sugar Hill. She built out a beautiful apartment in their daylight basement and filled it with her beloved memories and her cat Paddy.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, sisters Anita Abernathy, Sue Black and brother, Dan Abernathy.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Steve Ayers of Sugar Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Cathy Kincaid of Dial; Tim and Alta Kincaid of Dial. Grandsons Matthew Kincaid and Andrew Kincaid of Kennesaw, Georgia.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 14 from 1pm to 3pm at the Church on the Hill Café in Sugar Hill, Georgia.
