Edith Rose Borngeeser Harris passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on May 15, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the beloved daughter of Edith Hughes Borngeeser and Aurthur Borngeeser.
After graduating high school, Edith followed her calling to care for others by attending nursing school in New York, where she became a dedicated and compassionate nurse. She married Harold Frederick Harris, and together they began building a family, welcoming the first of their three children in 1954. Edith made Cleveland, Georgia, her home for the final 32 years of her life.
Edith’s life was full of love, adventure, and a deep appreciation for nature and animals. She was a passionate gardener—even owning her own plant company, The Green Pinky. Her green thumb and love for the earth were matched only by her adventurous spirit. Alongside her daughter Gail, Edith traveled the world, visiting numerous countries and creating cherished memories. France held a special place in her heart, and she treasured the time they spent there together. She and Gail also enjoyed several cruises to the Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas and St. Croix. The two shared a vacation home near Lake Chapala in Mexico, where they spent long stretches of time soaking up the beauty and joy of their surroundings.
One of Edith's favorite past-times was being taught by her mother how to do needlepoint, sew, knit, crochet and made most of her children's clothes while they grew up. Everyone loved getting an afghan or a pair of socks from Edith come birthdays and holidays.
Animals were also a constant and cherished part of Edith’s life. She and her young family once had two monkeys—Pretty Boy and Mr. Spock—and she was never without a furry companion. Especially fond of Chihuahuas, Edith helped her daughter Gail breed them and was caring for three at the time of her passing.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Claire Borngeeser Shultis; and her beloved daughter, Dr. Gail Ellen Harris.
Edith is survived by her brother, Bruce Anthony Born; her sister, Theresa Anne Borngeeser Conti; her son, Gregg Arthur Harris; her daughter, Tracie Anne Harris; her grandson, Gregg Anthony Harris; her granddaughter, Heather Nicole Harris Massey; and her great-grandchildren: Kinsley Araye Shaw, Kyler Aven Shaw, Kooper Axel Shaw, and Barrett Abel Massey.
Edith will be remembered for her warmth, resilience, quick wit, and the beauty she brought into the world—through the gardens she grew, the animals she loved, and the lives she touched.
