She is survived by their 3 children, Angela (and Buddie) Currie of Hoschton, GA, Kim (and Brian) Oliver of Hoschton, GA, Tom Philpot, Jr (and Jody) of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren, Christen (and Michael) Roberts, Josh (and Mekinnah) Currie, Ashley (and Justin) West, Amanda (and Dalton) Carter, T. Joann was born in 1941 in Augusta, Georgia. She was raised, married and started her family there. Her upbringing created a woman that had a passion to serve children and would later influence her in becoming a psychiatric nurse. Through discipline and hard work, she obtained her nursing degree while she finished raising her children. Her career led her to serve many children with troubled pasts, trials, and tribulations. After many years of working with children in the psychiatric hospital setting, she served as a head nurse at the Youth Detention Center in Gainesville, Georgia until her retirement. She thoroughly enjoyed daily devotions leading children and youths to a path of rediscovery and healing, not only meeting their mental and physical needs, but also their internal spiritual needs. Her hard work, love, and dedication that she poured into these children inspired several of her grandchildren to follow in similar careers caring for patients in healthcare settings or teaching in the school settings.

Joann had a big heart and loved people. She was passionate about child development, which led her to open her family’s home to a foreign exchange student with a physical disability. This act not only allowed her family to serve someone in need but also fulfilled her own love languages of service and generosity. Through this, she not only impacted his life, but also made a lasting impression on those that knew her.

She loved any type of gathering with family and friends. Whether it be birthdays, celebrations or holidays, she enjoyed planning, cooking, and decorating for it. She made an effort to bond and build special memories with everyone she knew. Over the years, her home was always a warm and inviting place for all to enjoy.

Joann modeled compassion and unconditional love by always giving to others. She loved traditions, family trips, decorating, and planning and celebrating holidays with her friends and family. Her legacy as a nurturing daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandmother, great grandmother and friend will never be forgotten and will be forever cherished.

The family will have a time of visitation for family and friends on Sunday, April 27, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to ALL 5 INC. at All5inc.org.
