In Loving Memory of William H. Slack III

1932-2025

William H. “Billy” Slack III passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. He was born in Gainesville, Georgia, on February 3, 1932, to the late William H. Slack Jr. and Idalu (Haugabook) Slack.

He attended high school at the McCallie School in Chattanooga Tennessee and went on to Vanderbilt University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English.  He served honorably in The US Navy after college before joining his family’s business in 1956, the Slack Auto Parts Company in Gainesville Ga.  After his father William H. Slack Jr. passed away in 1971, he became the CEO of the company until his retirement in 2006 capping off a 50 year career in the automotive replacement parts industry.

He was an astute, honest, innovative businessman who cared for his employees and customers.  Under his leadership, the Slack Auto Parts Company became well known in Northeast Georgia for quality products and excellent customer service.

Beyond his professional achievements, Billy was deeply involved in his community in diverse ways from the United Way to the arts and was the former director of the Gainesville Redevelopment Authority.  His generosity and kindness were well-known, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He married his college sweetheart, Tennent Lee Griffin, in 1955.  Together, they raised a loving family, including 2 children and 4 grandchildren.  He always made sure his family’s needs were met especially emphasizing and providing educational opportunities for his children.

In his spare time, Billy was an avid and very good tennis player.  Many younger opponents found this out on the losing end of matches with him over the years.  He also loved history especially military history and art.

His legacy is that of a southern gentlemen who treated others with courtesy, kindness, and respect.  Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

William H. Slack III is survived by his wife of 70 years, Tennent Lee; his children, William H. Slack IV (Diana) and Dr. Philip Tennent Slack; his grandchildren, Catherine, Will, Tennent  and Reed; his sister, Enid W. Slack of Denver Co., his extended family at the Slack Auto Parts Company and numerous friends who knew and loved him.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers who provided him with such compassionate care in his final years. Their kindness and professionalism brought comfort and dignity to his life, and their contributions are deeply appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Good News Clinic in Gainesville, Ga.
