Barbara Jean Brown, age 89, a lifelong resident of Buford, passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2025 after an extended illness. Barbara is preceded in death by her loving husband and constant companion of 68 years William “Billy” Brown, her son Warren A. Brown, and her mother Bessie Cochran.
Barbara is survived by her son William A. Brown (Carol), daughter Cheryl Harris (John), and son John “Johnny” Brown (Cara). Barbara is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Barbara was lovingly referred to as “Nana” or “Nanny” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barbara was born in Canton, Georgia but moved to Buford at a young age. She eventually met her forever mate Billy Brown and settled in Buford. They began their family by having twin boys William and Warren – purported to be the first set of identical twins born at the old Hutchins Memorial Hospital in Buford. Cheryl and Johnny would follow later. Many people would often see Billy and Barbara walking together daily down Main Street in Buford in their golden years – Billy wearing his straw western hat. The family takes comfort in knowing they are together again.
Barbara worked several jobs outside the home to include Loveable and Allen’s 5¢&10¢ in Buford. However, most of her years she was a homemaker and provided daycare to many Buford children from the 1960’s through the early 2000’s. Many of these children also referred to Barbara as “Nana” or “Nanny” – as though they were her own. She loved caring for children.
Barbara’s family and friends will cherish the memories she leaves behind. She will be especially missed during holidays, special occasions and family gatherings when she cooked. Barbara was a southern lady who knew how to cook southern meals. Her homemade ”cathead” biscuits, fried apple pies and German chocolate cake will never be replaced in the eyes of her family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Flanigan Funeral Home on March 25, 2025 from 5:30 to 8:30. A private graveside service and interment will be held at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens.
