Jean Carnet

Obituary Date: Sunday, March 16, 2025

Jean Carnet, 77, of Clermont, GA passed away at home in the loving arms of his family on March 16, 2025.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Hargrove Carnet; his son Marc Carnet, Marc’s wife Debbie and their two children, Luke and Clara (Tucker, GA); and his daughter Catherine Elisabeth Everett, her husband Ben Everett, and their three children, Jubal, Georgia and Maren (Ft. Campbell, KY); and his sister, Nadine Dangleterre and brother-in-law Christian Dangleterre (Chatillon, France).

Jean was born in Vergoncey, in Normandy. His father was a baker and the family moved to Paris when Jean was five years old to open a bakery and pastry shop. He attended private elementary and high schools and later studied architecture and urban planning in professional schools in Paris. After visiting the United States as an exchange student he set his sights on moving to the US to live and work.

He began his career in France as an urban designer for French architectural firms, moved to the United States in 1971, enrolled at Georgia State University in Atlanta, earning a Bachelor of Visual Arts. He later opened his own successful design firm, Carnet Communications, focusing on marketing, graphic design and photography. His clients included some of Atlanta’s most significant architects, landscape architects, and
developers, as well as colleges, universities and non-profit organizations.

Jean was an accomplished commercial and fine art photographer. His work included extensive landscape architecture photography of most of the finest estate properties in metro Atlanta, horses, wildlife, sunsets and documentary images both in color and black and white.

Jean and his wife Sandra lived and raised their two children in Atlanta but in 1996, they moved to Clermont, GA. They were lovers of horses, avid equestrians and foxhunters. They established Oxer Farm, the first equestrian center in Clermont to focus on offering local horse shows to developing young riders. Oxer Farm, under their leadership, became a popular destination for the northeast Georgia and regional equestrian communities. In the move to Clermont, Jean added farming and large property landscape maintenance to his long list of achievements. He spent many hours on the Hustler, mowing the beautiful fields and galloping lanes at Oxer Farm so they could be enjoyed by his family, friends and visitors alike.

Jean’s story spans France and the American South. From Paris to the small hamlet of Clermont. He was a thoughtful, philosophical, witty and passionately creative person.

Most importantly, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who passed along his love art, photography, and the land to his family, friends through his eternally creative spirit.
