Alice Joyce Maynard Wiley was born on December 11, 1937, in Buford, Georgia. She departed this life on March 4th, 2025. She was the daughter of Willie Louise Smith Maynard and Walter Earl Maynard. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Frank Wiley Jr., and her brother, Walter Donald Maynard.
Alice received her early education at Buford Colored Elementary and High School, where she served as class president and played on the girls' basketball team. She continued her studies at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, earning a degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Art. While at Spelman, she was an active member of the Glee Club, nurturing her love for music.
During her time at the Atlanta University Center, Alice met and married the love of her life, Frank Wiley Jr. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three daughters: Tracy, Terri, and Valencia.
Committed to education, Alice went on to earn her master’s degree in Education from Clark Atlanta University. She dedicated 35 years to teaching in Buford City Schools, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
In retirement, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, triumphing over stage 3 breast cancer. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—watching her favorite game shows, shopping, and indulging in arts and crafts.
Alice was a devoted member of Poplar Hill Missionary Baptist Church, actively participating in Women In Action and the American Legion Post #534. She was also a founding member of the Wiley-Watson Scholarship Committee, ensuring educational opportunities for future generations.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Tracy Hardy (Rickey Wilburn) of Buford, GA; Terri Wiley of Buford, GA; and Valencia Wiley of Buford, GA. Her granddaughters, Nicole Hardy (Jermaine Cotton) of Peachtree City, GA, and Breana Miller of Buford, GA. Her niece, Anne (Emmanuel) Fournier, and great-niece and nephew, Louviena and Walter Fournier, of Orléans, France. Cousins Floyd (Lillian) Carter of South Bend, IN, and Dennis (Carolyn) Carter of Indianapolis, IN. She is also survived by a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Alice Joyce Maynard Wiley’s legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
