Sandra Brown King

Obituary Date: Friday, February 28, 2025

Sandra Brown King, age 83, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025 due to Parkinson’s. She was born on January 6, 1942 in Monroe, Georgia to the late Cary Brown and Sara Williams Brown.

She is survived by her husband, Henry of 62 years, and her sons: William “Bill” Henry (Maureen) King, III of Commerce, GA; Barry (Jenna) King of Colbert, GA; along with four grandchildren, (Clark, Jackson, Dabney, and Spencer King). Her younger brother, Kent (Ann) Brown, and many loving family members.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest brother and sister-in-law Mell (Dean) Brown, sister and brother-in-law Gail (Frank) Barber, and one granddaughter Catherine Morgan King.

Sandra grew up on a farm in Walton County and was a cheerleader and basketball star for the Monroe Hurricanes. She set the record for scoring the most points in one basketball game at Monroe High School. From there, she went on to be a cheerleader at North Georgia College in Dahlonega where she met the love of her life at a school dance, married, and then graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1964. Early in her marriage, Sandra taught 3rd grade for six months at Glen Haven Elementary in Decatur, Georgia until she had her first son, Bill. She and Henry moved to Fort Lee, Virginia where Henry was stationed in the Army for two years and their second son, Barry was born.

During college, Sandra began honing her tennis skills after learning how to play from her Uncle Thomas Riden. She went on to become a professional tennis coach after being trained by Coach Dennis Van Der Meer at the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, SC. She taught, and coached many ALTA and USTA teams around the Metropolitan Atlanta area from 1975 until 2015. She was a AAA doubles player who always made it look effortless! Before putting the racquet down for good, Sandra peaked at number 2 Women’s Doubles in the “40 and Over” age group for the State of Georgia.

Sandra was known for her beautiful smile, and her carefree, positive outlook on life. She loved her boys, and was a great influence by teaching them the importance of being self-reliant at a young age. Sandra was a proud mother, and grandmother who never hesitated to brag about her children, and grandchildren. Family trips to Hilton Head, or New Smyrna Beach, Florida each year was a cherished tradition.

Before moving to Jefferson in 2021, she enjoyed her book club get togethers, TJMaxx shopping excursions, Chick Fil A, and was very active in her Sunday school class at Smoke Rise Baptist Church where she volunteered in the nursery on Sunday mornings. She was a long time member and left many friends behind.

Please join us for a celebration of Sandra’s life at Jefferson Baptist Church, 246 Washington Street, Jefferson, GA  on Sunday, March 9th  at 3:00 PM. Visitation immediately afterwards in the Fellowship Hall.
