James Oscar Tyson

Obituary Date: Monday, February 3, 2025

Today we celebrate the life of James Oscar Tyson.  James was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 26, 1946.  He was the second of two children born to William Boyd Tyson Sr. & Jewel Patrick.

The family will receive friends and guests for a memorial service on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 2PM at Gainesville First United Methodist Church in the rear chapel of the rear parking lot. A small reception is to follow.

James confessed his hope in Jesus Christ on April 11, 1954, at an early age, at East Lake Methodist Church in Atlanta Georgia where he was also baptized.  He started his leadership journey early by joining the Cub Scouts and later the Boy Scouts.

He attended J.C. Murphy High School and Graduated in 1964. He attended the University of Georgia & Southern Technical College Graduating with an associate’s degree in architectural engineering technology in June of 1967. He was then employed at Lockheed Marietta where he worked on the C-5A Galaxy helping design the Troop parachute exit.  He also worked at several construction and manufacturing companies before starting his own successful business, Atlantic Equipment, around 1986 and JTI in 1988.

James married Peggy Watson in 1969 and had one son, Mark Andrew Tyson.  The marriage later dissolved.

James made his way around the map. He lived in St. Petersburg Florida, Fort Myers Florida, Roswell Georgia, and Gainesville Georgia. His final home was Flowery Branch Georgia.

His favorite saying was, “Gimme me a dollar” and “Fish on!!” His favorite number was 333 and he made it known. He would do anything to go fishing and enjoy good food & family.

In 1975, James married Linda Kay Dupree joining in Matrimony as a blended family with their children Mark Andrew Tyson and Robert Edward Frazier Jr.  Later Joshua James Tyson and Jacqueline Nicole Tyson were born.  He spent years nurturing his family by being involved in the kid's academic & extracurricular activities. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.  James and Linda were blessed to have 49 years of happiness together.  On March 8, 2025, they would have had 50 beautiful years together. 

James believed in working hard and taking care of his family.  He loved fishing, playing poker with his high school buddies, cooking, spending time with his family, and traveling to his favorite place Costa Rica.

He continued to work as the business owner of Atlantic Equipment & JTI until February 3, 2025, when he took his last breath in the presence of family at Northeast Georgia Medical in Gainesville at 8:08 pm. 

He was preceded in death by his parents William Boyd Tyson Sr. and Jewel Patrick Tyson, great grandparents Oscar Payton Tyson, Nancy Ozelia Boyd (Nannie), James Marion Patrick, and Dovie Odelle Adams.

He is survived by his wife Linda Kay Tyson, their children, Mark (wife) Mimi, Robert Frazier, Joshua James, (wife) Amanda, Nicole Smith, their grandchildren, Jewell, Jonas, Harrison, Markos, and Lily Rose. His Brother) William (Bill) (wife) Judy, (nephew) Michael (wife) Jackie (niece) Lisa Dunham and many friends and colleagues.
