Calvin Ray Sneed, 79 of Gainesville passed away Monday February 10, 2025, leaving behind a loving family and a legacy of service and kindness.
He was born on July 7, 1945, in Chattanooga, TN to the late Amos and Ruth Vaughan Sneed
Calvin graduated from Tyner High School in 1964. He then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 until 1971, including time fighting in the Vietnam War. After his military service, Calvin became a skilled heavy equipment operator. He helped build many of the freeways we use today.
An active member of the Gainesville community, Calvin was a member of the Gainesville Elks Club, serving as Exalted Ruler for several years. He also worked on drug awareness programs and brought dictionaries to elementary schools in Hall and Dawson Counties, was a member of the Paul E. Bolding Post #7 American Legion, where he served as Post Commander.
Calvin loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He shared this love with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, creating lasting memories of their time with "Papa."
Calvin was known for his gentle soul and friendly smile. He was always ready to help others when he could.
He was married to Sue Fowler Sneed for 30 years; he has now joined her in heaven. Sue passed away June 12, 2022.
Calvin Ray Sneed will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, service, and love for his family will be remembered for years to come.
Survivors include his children, Kim Childs, Cheryl and Marcus Manning, all of Chattanooga, TN, stepchildren, Amanda and Jasen Moore, Derek Fowler, all of Gainesville, GA, grandchildren, Addison, Preston, Brinley, Lincoln and Fowler, great grandchildren, Tripp and Jett, brother, Wayne Sneed, Ringold, GA, sister, Jannie Soloff, Chattanooga, TN, sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Doug Couter, San Antonio, TX. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
A private family graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. A Celebration of Life service held Saturday February 15, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at Lakewood Baptist Church. Rev. Don Ormsbee will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
