Wallace “Wally” Hugh Warren, age 70 of Clarkesville, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2025 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Nurnberg, Germany on February 21, 1954, Wally was the son of Dorothy Johnson Warren Callahan and the late Wilbur Moore Warren, II. His father’s Army career took the family to numerous postings, including Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter, Hawaii, where he attended Punahou School in Honolulu. In 1972, he graduated from North Springs High School in Atlanta and went on to Emory University, where he earned a B.A. in History, then an M.B.A. from Georgia State University. He was employed as an accountant at the J.C. Penney Distribution Center in Forest Park, followed by comptroller for Walton Bank & Trust in Monroe. While completing his M.A. in History at the University of Georgia, he worked as an archivist at the UGA Library for the Richard B. Russell Special Collections. For ten years he poured his love of reading into his job managing the Cornelia Library, where he enriched the lives of many patrons through the arrangement of multiple children’s programs, lectures, book talks, and author visits.
Most importantly, Wally was a devoted father, uncle, and selfless volunteer. He was known for his lifelong love of nature and the outdoors that he shared with friends and family. Over the years he mastered surfing, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, camping and canoeing, and readily identified birds by sight and song. He served many years with Volunteers for Literacy, the Clarkesville Elementary PTSO, Georgia Forest Watch, and the Soque River Watershed Association.
