Anis Shaw, affectionately known by her family and friends as “Sister” peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the home of her niece in Oxford, Georgia.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Sunday, February 2 2025 at Memorial Park Riverside Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of the funeral home. Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery.
Anis was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 19, in a year she kept secret. Her parents were the late Byron Shaw and Ruby Fulcher Shaw. At an early age she gained a second family when she came to live in Gainesville with her aunt Nadine, uncle Clifford and their three children.
After graduating from Gainesville High School, she moved back to Atlanta where she graduated from the Grady Hospital School of Nursing. This was the beginning of her 38 year career at Grady. There she was the Director of Quality Assurance and had also been the supervisor for two surgical units. When Anis left Grady, she went to work at Wesley Woods Senior Living. She was there for 12 years.
Combining her love for her country, her love for nursing and her love of travel, she joined the Air National Guard. After 5 years, she then transferred to the Air Force Reserves. She proudly served during peacetime and during Desert Storm as a flight nurse. She retired honorably from the military after 25 years of service with the earned rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She also received the honor of being chosen “Nurse of the Year”. In total, as a healthcare professional within the military and civilian service, her career spanned 50 years.
Aside from nursing, the military, and travel, Anis dearly loved spending time with her family, friends and her pets (a devoted “cat wrangler”). She could be found on Wednesday at the bridge table with her best game face on. She also loved cooking and entertaining at her home. Most of all, Anis loved her God. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville and was a faithful member of the Winsome Sunday School Class.
In addition to both sets of her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Patsy Shaw Casey, her nephews, Robert Casey, and Michael Casey and the three cousins with whom she shared their childhood home, Claude Bagwell, Frances Bagwell Jarrett and Betty Bagwell Carson.
Anis is survived by her niece, Esther Casey Ezell, her nephews, Rodney (Joann) Casey, Lee (Diane) Casey, her cousin, Jean Jarrett Buffington and a number of other family members.
