Gary was born on April 15, 1964 in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany while his father was serving in the US Army. Gary attended elementary school in Colorado Springs, CO and attended Rawlins High School in Rawlins, Wyoming. Upon graduation from high school, Gary received a full scholarship to the University of Wyoming where he received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and athletic training. Gary received his Masters degree from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL.
Since 1989, Gary has been the Certified Athletic Trainer at Athens Sports Medicine and at Athens Orthopedic Clinic where he provided medical care and attention to the athletes and coaches in many Northeast Georgia area high schools. For 36 years, Gary has been the certified athletic trainer at Commerce High School.
Gary met the love of his life, Kimberly Dobbs Scott, in 1998 and they resided at Lake Burton, GA. Gary loved the lake life, traveling with Kim and their friends, college football and high school wrestling. Gary was a self described “foodie” and enjoyed new, different and unique dining experiences. Gary will always be remembered as a gentle giant. Big G (his nickname to his colleagues, coaches and students) will be remembered as a good person with a genuine concern for others’ well being. Gary’s contributions to the athletic training community and the impact that he had on the numerous student athletes that he assisted with injury prevention, rehabilitation, and support will be a lasting legacy and memory for all who had the privilege of knowing Gary.
Gary was preceded in death by his father and mother, James M Scott and Darlene Bodle Scott, his brother, James Scott and his father and mother in law, Wayne Dobbs and Dale Cole Dobbs.
Gary was survived by his wife, Kimberly Dobbs Scott; his nieces, Brittney Scott (Lewis Booth) of Shawnee, KS, Ashton Scott Marks (Christopher) of Independence, MO, Ansley Dobbs of Gainesville, GA and Madeline Dobbs of Gainesville, GA; great niece, Madeline Marks of Independence, MO; brother and sister in law, Woody and Teena Dobbs of Flowery Branch, GA.
Memorial Services will be Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 2 pm at Clayton Baptist Church Life Center with a reception following the service at Waterfall Club at Lake Burton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gary can be made to A Place of Hope in Clayton, GA or to the Lake Burton Civic Association Foundation for Student Scholarships.
