Betty Sue Smith Thompson died on January 9, 2025 in Raleigh, NC at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Robert Thompson, her son, Blake Thompson and her sisters Louise Walker, Edith Chambers, Alice Boleman and Grace Smith.
She is survived by son, Bryan (Barbara) Thompson, daughter Beth (Martin) Mahon, grandsons Benjamin (Renee) Thompson, Brandon Thompson and Walker Holloway, great-grandchildren Madelyn, Elizabeth, Wesley and Abigail Thompson and her sister Mary McClure.
Betty was born in New Holland, GA to Hoyt and Mattie Smith. She received her B.S. degree in Education from Tift College and taught elementary school in Georgia and Alabama for more than 30 years. Upon retirement, Betty and Bob attended Berry College where they became certified as teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and taught in Korea, China, and Hawaii. Their work with international students brought them tremendous joy and cultivated enduring friendships.
Betty will be best remembered for her twinkling blue eyes, peaceful nature, and generous hospitality. Without hesitation, she would prepare meals, pray quietly, and provide support to family, friends and individuals in need.
Betty will be laid to rest by her husband’s side in Gainesville, GA. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Memorial Park – Riverside Chapel. Her family wishes to thank the staff of Maple Court Senior Living, Traditions Hospice, and Transitions LifeCare for their loving care of Betty. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering at the International Mission Board (imb.org).
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Memorial Park Cemetery.
