Mary Adriana Theresia Hopman, lovingly known to many as "Mary," has joined the angels on January 7, 2025, at the remarkable age of 94. Born on May 13, 1930, in the picturesque town of Oud Heusden, Netherlands, she graced this world with her presence, leaving footprints of kindness, optimism, and generosity wherever she trod. Mary's life was a testament to faith, adventure, and family devotion.
With her husband, Joseph Hopman, they moved from the Netherlands to South Africa where 3 of her children were born. In 1960, the family traveled to Indiana where they built their family business; Hopman Jewelers. Another 3 children were born there. In 1982, they moved to Sunrise, Florida where they continued the family jewelry business.
Mary was more than just a name in the community; she was a beacon of faith and love, living a life deeply rooted in her strong Catholic beliefs. She and her husband of 50 years, Joseph, were founding members of All Saints Catholic Church in Sunrise, Florida. As a devoted member of St. Michael Catholic Church, in Gainesville, Georgia, she found great joy in her faith and generously shared it with all those around her.
Her greatest pride and joy came in her role as a mother to her five surviving children: Patrick (Eileen) Hopman, Mariette (Dennis) Tipton, Dennis Hopman, Jennifer Hopman, and Michael (Julie) Hopman . Though she was preceded in passing by her beloved daughter, Yvonne Stahl, her memory and love will undoubtedly live on through her adoring children, 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren . She is survived by her brother, Tarcies Van Berge Henegouwen and her sister, Bernadette Berkelmans. Mary was a fervent supporter of her husband’s family jewelry business, a journey that bore testament to her dedication and loyal heart.
Mary had a zest for life that extended far beyond her hometown, as her adventurous spirit led her to traverse the globe. With each journey, she lovingly documented her travels through her passion for photography, capturing endless family moments that will be cherished forever. Her photographs provide vivid snapshots of not just her travels, but her life's journey, woven together by her love for family.
In Gainesville, Georgia, where she spent her golden years, Mary became an active and beloved member of the local Newcomers Club. She generously gave her time, and with her trademark optimism, she welcomed new friends into her life, creating a warm and inviting community for many.
Her family finds solace in the cherished wisdom she left behind, especially her frequent reminder: "Mom always said be kind to one another." It is this legacy of kindness and compassion that lives on in the hearts of her children, extended family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
As we gather to celebrate Mary's incredible life journey, we choose to remember her radiant smile, warm embrace, and unyielding spirit of love. Though gone from our sight, Mary’s spirit lives on, brightly shining in the lives she touched. Rest in peace, dear Mary, your legacy of love and kindness will never fade.
