Mary Louise Detwiler, 81, of Dawsonville passed away Tuesday December 31, 2024 at her residence following a period of declining health.
Born February 4, 1943, Mary Lou had been a resident of Dawson County for over 30 years. For most of her career, she worked in home healthcare before serving as a professor of nursing at North Georgia College until her retirement. She loved to garden and work with plants around her home. Animals held a special place in her heart, and she had adopted many throughout her lifetime. A dedicated volunteer, she helped at the Dawson County Senior Center serving meals on wheels and at the Dawson County Humane Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Young.
Surviving are her children, Amy Abner (Ben) of Woodstock, David Young (Erin) of Lexington, KY, Elizabeth Young of Marietta; grandchildren, Charlotte, Jackson, Maggie, Emma, William; great-granddaughter, Collins; sister, Lee Dyson (Chris) of St. Simons Island; and numerous other extended family.
The family is grateful for the nurses and staff at Golden Rule Hospice who took such good care of Mary Lou. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
