Carolee (Wells) Gailey

Obituary Date: Monday, December 16, 2024

Carolee (Wells) Gailey, age 82, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Monday, December 16, 2024, on day before her 83rd. birthday.

Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 pm, Friday, December 19, 2024, at Memorial Park Riverside Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

She was born on December 17, 1941, in Evansville, Indiana, ten days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she was the daughter of the late Theo and Kathleen Wells.

Her family moved to Gainesville in 1954. Carolee was active in scouting, helping to build Camp Echoee. She even attended the International Girl Scout Round-up in Colorado in 1958. She graduated from GHS in 1959 and was selected as one of her class’s beauties.

Following high school, she attended and graduated from Mercer University in three years. Later, she received her master’s degree from UGA’s school of education.

            Carolee met her future husband, Gerald Gailey, in 8th grade at Main Street School. They were married in 1963 and celebrated 49 years of marriage. Carolee taught at North Hall High School and at the Alto correctional facility. Many former students remember the preparation for and writing of their term papers.

            Carolee and Gerald were dedicated Bulldog fans. For years they attended every home and away game. The only game they missed was in Hawaii. Carolee loved her dachshunds and always had one or two as pets. She was an avid history buff and reader, often reading a book a day.

            In retirement, Carolee began delivering Meals on Wheels and did so for 26 years. She also served as an election official for 12 plus years.

            Carolee is survived by her sister, Dawn Dobbs (Gainesville); her brother, Ted Wells (Metropolis, IL); her sister-in-law, Myra G. Book, her nephews and niece, Courtney Wilke, Hunter Wilke, Aaron Wells, Drew Wells, and Jamie Beth (Charles) Antonell Gruera, as well as many cousins.
