James Christopher Vreeland, 69, of Buford, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2024 surrounded by his family.
Chris was born on March 8, 1955, in Savannah, Georgia, was the beloved son of James Frederick Vreeland and Martha Umphrey Vreeland. At the age of five, Chris’ family moved to Falls Church, Virginia, a place he would always call home. He graduated from George Mason High School, where he built friendships that have endured for over 60 years. Many friends and family knew Chris as "Moose", a nickname that reflected his big presence and even bigger heart. He was admired for his kindness, humor, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. In 1973, Chris “Moose” returned to Georgia to attend college at LaGrange College graduating in 1977. A proud member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, he formed lasting bonds that enriched his life.
In 1984, Chris began a remarkable 33-year career at SunTrust Bank, retiring in 2017 as Vice President of Regional Security in the Corporate Security division. It was at SunTrust where he met the love of his life, Ivonne in 1985. They married in 1987 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and together built a beautiful faith-filled life, raising two sons, Corey and Tyler. Chris cherished his faith, and family above all else and was a devoted husband, father, and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ivonne S. Vreeland, his sons, Corey Alexander Vreeland and Tyler Joshua Vreeland, his fiancée, Saige Fetters, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara & Luis Vazquez, niece Christy Miguez and her husband Albert, grandnephew and grandniece Alberto (AJ) and Joselyn Miguez, nephew Tony Vazquez and his wife Alex, and grandnephew Dominic Vazquez, nephew Andrew Vazquez and his wife Natalia and sister and brother in law Lori & Steve Ritenour and niece and nephew Halley and Aaron Ritenour. Chris “Moose” also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends who adored him. Chris’ “Moose's” warmth and compassion were hallmarks of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. As one friend put it, he was a "big man with an even bigger heart."
Mass of Resurrection will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, Georgia, on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m.
The family invites all who knew Chris “Moose” to join them in honoring his memory. Chris, you will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love you.
