Richard Royce Shaw, born October 28, 1940, died peacefully at home on November 27, 2024, in Gainesville, Georgia. A veteran and respected member of the community, his legacy is marked by dedication and deep love of family.
Preceded in death by parents James Ray and Dorothy Hudgins Shaw, Richard is survived by his wife, Donna, children; Debi Shaw, Steven Shaw and partner Chelsey Reynolds, Staci Shaw Tunkel and husband David; grandchildren Carson Lee, Kinsey Lee, Ray Tunkel, and McKenna Shaw; sister Rebecca Shaw Hooker; sister in-law Susan Smith Lamb of Little Rock and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A native of Gainesville, Richard graduated from Gainesville High School in 1958 where he played baseball and football for the Red Elephants and was awarded the most valuable player in 1957. He attended Tulane University on a football scholarship and later transferred to the University of Georgia where he received his degree and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. His long, wide-ranging career began with the Jesse Jewell Company in Gainesville and included twenty-eight years of service with the United States Coast Guard Reserves, retiring as a Captain 06 in 1990.
A service honoring Richard’s life will be held Saturday, December 14 at 3:00 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 1:30 prior to the service.
