John Cheney Thompson, Jr, 84, of Gainesville, Georgia passed away November 25, 2024, from heart and kidney disease.
He was born April 22, 1940, in Decatur, Georgia to the late John Cheney Thompson Sr and the late Ann Johnston Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Adams Thompson.
As a graduate of Gainesville High School, he excelled in basketball, football and tennis, earning Varsity letters in all three. He went on to attend North Georgia College in Dahlonega on an athletic scholarship, earning the top athlete on campus while there and studied Business Administration. Following college, he served in the Army for 6 years before starting his professional career in the financial industry where he won many awards for his accomplishments.
His passion for his community and giving back was always prevalent but really started to be in the forefront during this time as he served on the Northeast Georgia Council Eagle Board, was the President of the Young People's Service League, and an active member of the American Legion. He also served on the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Board for nearly 15 years, board chairman for one year. He was a member of the Gainesville Elks Lodge for 35 years and served as the pool chairman for 3 of those years.
That love for others was portrayed through everything he did, but truly shined through in the way he loved his family. He was a loving husband to Nancy for 54 years before her passing in 2015. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been the joy of his life. He was able to pass surrounded by family, knowing that he is being reunited with his late wife in Heaven.
