George Carlton “Carl” Burdette, age 85, passed away on November 8, 2024, at North East Georgia Medical Center. Carl was preceded in death by his parents George Forrest and Loren Sparks Burdette.
Carl leaves wife, Lahoma Woods Burdette, married for 65 years; sons, George Carlton “Buz” Burdette (Lori) and Forrest Wade Burdette (Holly) , and daughter, Allison Heusel (David), grandchildren, Andrew Zackary Burdette (Margaret), Heather Mae Heusel Schmidt (Daniel), Harrison David “Harry” Heusel, Landon Cole Burdette; sister, Emma Sue Burdette O’Neill.
After graduating from high school, Carl enrolled at Auburn University (then known as the Alabama Polytechnic Institute) in 1957 and graduated in 1961 with a BS in Business Administration with a major in Accounting.
Carl started work with the General Accountability Office (then known as the General Accounting
Office) in March 1961. He worked with GAO for 39 years before retiring. During this time, Carl evaluated various federal government programs and activities and prepared reports to the Congress on their effectiveness. During the latter part of his career, he concentrated on examining the accuracy of the pricing of defense contracts awarded by the Department of Defense for weapon systems and was able to recover from defense contractors any defective pricing. During his career, Carl received a number of awards, including GAO’s Meritorious Service Awards, Special Recognition for outstanding performance and others.
Carl enjoyed several hobbies after retirement but, primarily loved to do genealogy research on the branches of his family and did genealogy research for others. Carl also enjoyed reading and grew up asking for books for Christmas rather than presents.
Carl was active at Ivy Creek Baptist Church, having served in several capacities, including carrying out deacon duties, establishing the Early Morning Sunday School Class, and working in the nursery department. Carl was ordained as a deacon in 1967 at Hillwood Baptist Church, Huntsville, AL and through the years served in this capacity in several churches.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Ivy Creek Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Craig Dale and Associate Pastor Ted Williams. Carl will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour with visitation one hour prior to the service.
A graveside service officiated by Re. Dave Wiley will be held following the funeral service. Carl will be buried in the Ivy Creek Baptist Church cemetery with church deacons serving as pallbearers and the Early Morning Believers Sunday School Class serving as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ivy Creek Baptist Church building fund or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
