Walter C. “Wally” Alford, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2024 at age 75. Wally was born on February 13, 1949, in Atlanta, Georgia. The third son of Charles J. Alford, Jr. and Elanor L. “Lynn” Alford (Petry) in Tucker, Georgia, Wally is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lynn Ernest Alford, son Carlton Alford and Patricia Anne Alford (grandchildren Ryan and Daniel Alford), daughter Laura A Cochling and Eric Cochling ( grandchildren Aidan, Elise and Grant Cochling), son John Alford and Gypsi Alford (grandchildren Emerson and William Alford) and son Coleman Alford and Casey Alford (grandchildren Charlie, Cameron and Conor Alford); brother Charles J. “Buzz” Alford, III and Jean Alford.
Wally grew up in the Tucker community, was a member of his local Boy Scout Troop, and played clarinet and varsity football for Tucker High School where he graduated in 1967. A veteran of the National Guard, Wally attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the business school (1970) and later a Juris Doctor, cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law (1973). Wally practiced law for many years in Tucker, becoming a fixture of the Tucker and DeKalb County legal community, and was General Counsel and Director for Tucker Federal Bank. Wally was a lifelong musician, having studied piano and clarinet in his youth, performed in rock-n-roll bands in college, and in his later life, mastered the banjo and dobro as a frequent performer of bluegrass, which was his favorite form of music. In addition to his passion for music, Wally was an enthusiastic supporter of the Scouting movement, as Den Leader, Cubmaster, and Scoutmaster. Wally and wife Lynn volunteered together as trainers of adult leadership in the BSA Wood Badge program and in later years Wally helped found the Tali Atsila Outdoor Skills Program along with serving on the board of directors for the Northeast Georgia Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, GA, with Rev. Jim Buckman officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 17th from 12: 00 PM until time of service at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Walter “Wally” Alford to the James E.
